We want our patients to be well informed and confident about the procedures we offer, so we thought it would be a good time to answer some of the most common questions we are asked about CoolSculpting:
Is CoolSculpting Safe?
As an FDA-cleared procedure for the treatment of visible fat bulges in the submental area, thigh, abdomen, and flank, we believe it to be entirely safe for our patients. As the #1 non-invasive fat reduction procedure and with millions of CoolSculpting procedures performed worldwide, it is proven to be a safe and effective treatment. Dr O’Donnell would not offer any procedure that was not thought to be entirely safe for our patients.
How does CoolSculpting Work?
The CoolSculpting procedure safely delivers precisely controlled cooling to gently and effectively target the fat cells underneath the skin. Treated fat cells are crystalized (frozen) and then die. Over a period of time, your body naturally processes the fat and eliminates these dead cells, leaving a more sculpted you.
Are there any side effects?
Some patients experience sensations of pulling, tugging, mild pinching, intense cold, tingling, stinging, aching, and cramping at the treatment site, during the procedure itself. After the procedure, typical side effects include temporary redness, swelling, blanching, bruising, firmness, tingling, stinging, tenderness, cramping, aching, itching, or skin sensitivity. These effects are temporary and generally resolve within days. Occasionally, additional side effects can occur. Before you commit to the procedure, ask our physicians if the CoolSculpting procedure is right for you.
When will I start to see results?
We understand that you are eager to see changes to your body after the procedure. You may start to see changes as quickly as 3 weeks after your treatment, but you will experience the most dramatic results after 2 months. Your body will still continue to flush out fat cells for up to 4 to 6 months after treatment. Take a look at our before and after gallery to see our patients results after treatment.
How long does each treatment take and how many will I need?
Dr. O’Donnell and his team will create an individualized treatment plan tailored to your specific goals. The length of each CoolSculpting treatment will vary depending on the number of areas being treated during one visit. Each area usually takes around 35-60 minutes, although some patients have more than one treatment during the same office visit. The number of treatments you will need will depend on your own personalized goals.
Is CoolSculpting painful?
The CoolSculpting procedure will feel cold on your skin, but no so much painful. Though you may feel intense cold initially, this feeling usually subsides within 5 to 10 minutes as the area numbs. Because most applicators use a vacuum to draw fatty tissue into the applicator cup, you may also feel some pulling, tugging, and/or mild pinching. All of these sensations will subside shortly after the procedure. You may feel some soreness at the site of the procedure for a few days after the procedure. Because CoolSculpt is noninvasive there is no lasting pain, no need for pain relief after the treatment and no scars will be left on your skin.
Are the results permanent?
Once the fat cells have been eliminated by CoolSculpting they are gone for good. They skin cells will not regrow. It is, however, important to avoid weight gain as the fat cells that are left behind may stretch to accommodate the extra fat. By maintaining a healthy diet and exercise regimen, your CoolSculpting results can last indefinitely.
