When should I consider a facelift?
You may wish to consider a facelift if you feel self-conscious about the way your face and neck look, you wear turtlenecks and scarves to hide your aging neck, you feel your face makes you look much older than you feel or you believe an aging appearance negatively impacts your career or personal relationships.

A former patient of Dr. O’Daniel’s said of her facelift surgery, “I originally found Dr. O’Daniel when I was searching for someone to do laser treatments on my face. I have all this peach fuzz on my face, and as I’ve gotten older, there’s more of it. During my consultation, we also talked about other things. I had bags under my eyes that I used make up to cover, but once the make-up dried, you could still see the bags, and I didn’t like that. We talked about what he could do about that, and then I went home, and I did my research. I checked testimonials about Dr. O’Daniel and the surgeries he had performed, and I was very satisfied with what I saw online and with what he told me. I went back to Dr. O’Daniel and took pictures with me of when I was in my 30s. I wish I was still in my 30s, but I’m not, I’m double that now.”

What is a facelift?
A facelift is a cosmetic surgical procedure that tightens and/or removes excess skin from the face, giving the face a more youthful appearance, and there are several different types of facelifts.

Mini Facelift
A mini facelift is a surgery technique designed to target aging in the lower face, which includes minimal sagging skin and early jowls. A mini facelift is less invasive and uses smaller incisions than traditional facelift techniques and thus it is less invasive. During surgery, incisions are made above the ear along the hair line, which will allow Dr. O’Danielto tighten skin and remove excess tissue thereby improving the appearance of jowls and neck. A mini facelift creates an uplifted, smoother facial contour; however, it is not designed for people with heavy jowls or severe signs of aging.

A mid-facelift targets sagging cheeks and is very effective in rejuvenating the midface region. A mid-facelift elevates the tissues of the cheeks thereby eliminating sagging and reducing deep creases. A mid-facelift is best for individuals who do not have jowls or sagging neck skin. During a mid-facelift, Dr. O’Daniel will make small incisions in the hairline above the ears, as well as inside the mouth. These allow the fat pads in the cheeks to be repositioned, while also tightening your skin. A mid-facelift improves facial definition, creates attractive cheek contours, and eliminates nasolabial folds. A mid-facelift will even improve lower eyelids and can be performed in conjunction with other facial procedures.

Traditional Facelift
A traditional facelift addresses moderate to advanced aging around the mid-face and neck. A traditional facelift is more extensive than a mini facelift; thus, the results are more dramatic. A traditional facelift also has a longer period of recovery. For a traditional facelift, incisions are positioned just behind the hairline, starting near the temples and around the front of the ear. By creating incisions that are hidden in the skin’s natural fold, Dr. O’Daniel repositions the deeper tissue beneath the skin and removes excess skin to smooth creases. During a traditional facelift, Dr. O’Daniel will also eliminate jowling and sagging skin under the chin. Following a traditional facelift, sutures are typically removed in 7-10 days, and patients normally return to work within 10 days. Generally, light exercise can be resumed 2 weeks after surgery.

What can I expect the day of my surgery?
Facelift surgery is usually done as an outpatient procedure. You will need someone to drive you to, and from, your surgery as you will receive general anesthesia, plus the procedure usually takes from 2-5 hours. Upon completion of your surgery, Dr. O’Daniel may bandage your face to minimize swelling and bruising, and small tubes may be present for a brief period to draw off any type of fluid drainage. You will be given specific instructions on how to care for your surgical site, medications to take, and when to follow up with Dr. O’Daniel. Full recovery usually takes about two weeks. Vigorous activity can usually be resumed approximately four weeks after your face lift.

Speaking about her day of surgery, Dr. O’Daniel’s patient added, “On the day of surgery, my husband took me to the surgery center. Of course, I was nervous, but I was determined I was going to do this. They took me back to prep me for surgery. Of course, everyone is just super there. The nurse came in and was putting me at ease. Dr. O’Daniel came in, and he’s always very chipper. Of course, Dr. O’Daniel is the best of the best. He’s such a perfectionist, and I’m glad because I had a lot to do! They gave me anesthesia, so I don’t remember, but I would say the surgery took 3-4 hours. Everything went well. We went home about 6pm that evening. I had some drains that had to be emptied and measured and those measurement amounts had to be called into Dr. O’Daniel’s office. We went back to Dr. O’Daniel a couple of days later and the drains were removed. A week or so later, I had my stitches removed, and after that I had periodic visits to Dr. O’Daniel over the next six months. After I got home, did take a couple of weeks before I really went out anywhere, like to the grocery, but I’d prepared for that ahead of time, and it was well worth it. Everyone in the office and in the surgical center were just wonderful. I just can’t say enough good things about them.

What are some things I can do to promote a speedy recovery?

• Follow all care instructions provided by your surgeon and attend all post-op appointments.
• Wear any wraps/bandages or compression garments provided by your surgeon.
• A cold compress can be used to counteract swelling in the first week. Stay away from warm/hot compresses until cleared by your surgeon.
• Do not take non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medications (like ibuprofen or aspirin) until cleared by your surgeon.
• Sleep with your head elevated.
• Use Arnica pills and anti-bruising cream if cleared by your surgeon.
• Get lots of sleep and rest. You’ve just had major surgery; allow your body a chance to recover.
• Plan not to work at all, even from home, for two weeks.
• Eat light and healthy foods that are easy to chew.
• Drink plenty of water.
• Refrain from scratching your face (even if it itches). Most itches can be treated with oral antihistamines like Benadryl or Allegra.
• Avoid strenuous exercise until you are fully healed.
• Use scar creams on incisions once cleared by your surgeon.
• Protect the surgical area and incisions with sunscreen. Reapply every few hours if outdoors.

How long will the results of my facelift last?
While a facelift does not change your fundamental appearance or stop the aging process, it will give you a refreshed, more youthful appearance. The effects of a facelift generally last for five to ten years. You will continue to age after your facelift, but you will still look five to ten years younger than you would have if you never had the facelift.

As Dr. O’Daniel’s patients have said, “…having Dr. O’Daniel perform my facelift was the best decision I ever made. Dr. O’Daniel and his staff are very professional, and Dr. O’Daniel is such a perfectionist. Looking at the pictures that were taken before my facelift, I have to remind myself that’s me. Now, I look refreshed. I look so much better. I couldn’t have made a better decision, and I’m very happy with it. It was well worth that month of recuperation. Of course, it takes a good six months before you’ll see the full results. It takes a while for all the swelling to go down, but you will be happy you had a facelift after seeing the results.”
