Well you could go all in and have a traditional, invasive facelift, or you may have another option. The innovative mini facelift may be exactly what you are looking for. Keep reading to find out more about this minimally invasive facelift.
What is a Mini Facelift?
A mini facelift is a less invasive surgical procedure that is performed to reduce signs of aging, particularly in patients who do not need or want a full, traditional facelift. This procedure aids in rejuvenating the lower parts of a patient’s face, giving them a more refreshed and younger looking appearance. Mini facelifts are meant to help restore lost volume in the cheeks, define the jawline, and tighten the skin and muscles of the neck. This procedure is usually preferred by younger patients who want to take care of the early appearance of wrinkles, loss of volume, and sagging skin without having to go through the invasive process of a traditional facelift. In fact, a mini facelift was created for this reason. The final results are similar to those of an old-fashioned facelift, but with minimal incisions and scarring.
How is a Mini Facelift Performed?
Each mini facelift procedure will differ slightly for each individual, depending upon the areas that need to be lifted and your unique facial shape. Incisions are usually made from the front of your ears, extending from the end of your ears all the way to your hair line. This makes the incisions, and scarring discrete once the procedure is complete. The tissue will be stretched and pulled up and back toward your ear. This is the technique that reduces the appearance of sagging, wrinkles, and jowls. Skin is not the only thing being tightened during a mini facelift. In order to achieve natural results, it is essential to also tighten the underlying muscular system. Your muscular system is ages and loses elasticity just like the skin on your face. It is also what is helping to give your skin support. So it is important to make sure that the underlying muscles are firm and tight as well. This system is called SMAS, or superficial muscular aponeurotic system. When the skin and SMAS have been pulled back enough to emphasize your natural contours, they will be sutured into place and any remaining excess tissue will be removed.
Dr. O’Daniel also incorporated micro fat grafting with a mini facelift to give patients the best results. This procedure involves transferring a patient’s body fat to areas of the face that have lost volume. Micro fat grafting takes three steps to perform. The first is to extract the fact from the patient. This is usually done through gentle liposuction in an area with excess fat, such as thighs or buttocks. Then the fat is isolated and cleansed. In the last step, the fat is injected into the areas where volume has been lost, such as the cheeks and around the mouth or eyes. An effect similar to stem cell treatment is seen when a patient’s fat is used to fill in areas of lost volume, skin texture is improved and wrinkles are reduced.
Mini Facelift Recovery
Mini facelifts are performed as an outpatient procedure. This means that you will be able to recover in the comfort of your own home. Although the recovery process is usually fast for most patients, it does vary. Many are able to return to work within a week following their procedure, but other patients need more time to heal. Most surgeons will want to see their patients the next day to observe the progress of the patient’s healing and schedule additional follow up appointments after that. Common side effects after surgery are bruising, swelling, temporary numbness, and slight discomfort. These symptoms will go away a few days after your procedure. Your doctor may recommend that you avoid strenuous activities that may raise your heart rate for a few days after your mini facelift, as well. For some patients it can take up to a full year to completely recover. Following your doctor’s post op instructions will give you the best results and the fastest recovery time.
Mini Facelift Results
Once you have fully recovered from your mini facelift you will notice that you have a more youthful appearance. Depending on the procedure selected by you and your doctor, your cheeks may look fuller, making you look younger. The folds around your mouth may be less apparent, so you will look more refreshed. Your jawline may be more defined, making your face appear more balanced. Your neck may be tighter and help you look years younger. Although it is called a mini facelift, it can provide maximum results.
The mini facelift does help to give you a younger and more rejuvenated appearance, but it cannot halt the aging process. Your face will continue to age normally after your procedure. There are many other minimally invasive and non-invasive treatments that our office offers that can be performed to help maintain results of a younger appearance. These include laser treatments, chemical peels, dermal fillers, Scultpra, Botox, etc.
Are You a Good Candidate?
Mini facelifts are a great option for men and women who are just starting to notice signs of aging, usually between the ages of 45-55. Such as slight wrinkles and minor sagging of the skin. Patients that are the best candidates for a mini facelift are those that want to be proactive to prevent signs of aging. If you have severely sagging and loose skin with deep wrinkles, you may want to consider having a full facelift. A full facelift procedure will provide you with better results, as a mini facelift is not able to address these more intense conditions.
